How do magic pre releases work

If asked at the end of the event, I will have a print out complete with the Standings of each and every player. If asked during before the end of a round , this question cannot be answered. Quite simply, I can only answer this question at the end of each round and at the end of the event. Again, a question that may be impossible to answer. This question is directly related to the second question; meaning as an organzier, I must have the standing of each player before I can pair them up with another player.

So, I have no way of knowing who you will play until the end of the round. Now, there is an exception: if you and another player are both undefeated and there are no other undefeated players, then I can confidently say that the two of you will be paired up in the next round. To do this you must: 1. Absolutely not. This is a Sealed Booster event- which means you can only use the cards from your card pool six booster packs and nothing else. Unfortunately, I rarely have a moment to myself or even a second to catch my breath.

I have the entire event to look after and any other customer that may drop by during our event. Being excited about a card is great but please please please use your discretion. But what are these events? How do they work? How do you find and attend one? Fear not! Follow me on this journey through the wonderful world of prerelease events. These events are usually very casual since most players are just there to fawn over the new set and play with the new cards. You might meet a Spike competitive player here or there based on your local area but most players are there to have fun. So, have fun with it! Build something crazy and make sure you explore everything the new set offers. Prereleases are almost always worth it, whether you measure it in cost or in fun. Your LGS will probably also offer some kind of prize as well, which means you can walk away with more if you end up doing well in your matches!

This tool is fantastic not only for finding local events near you like prereleases, drafts, or Friday Night Magic, but it can also show you all of the stores in your area where you might be able to find Magic products.

There are a few ways to register for prerelease events. Some stores offer digital registration on their websites while others require you to call the store and sign up or even just head inside and pay ahead of time.

Make sure to contact your LGS to find the best option that works for you and the safety of yourself and others. If your local store is charging more than that then you might want to consider looking elsewhere. Some stores may charge more but include additional stuff beyond just the regular prerelease kit. Plan for about 4 to 5 hours in most cases.

If you play four minute rounds with some extra time built in , you can imagine the event will take about five hours.

In addition to the midnight release, I attended a 2-Headed Giant event with my partner and my daughter later that weekend, so all told we walked away with 4 of these prerelease sets. So despite having played for less than a week, I managed a win-loss record of on Friday night and for 3rd place on Sunday when playing 2-Headed Giant with my kid. Does this mean that my 8-year old and I are some kind of Magic savants with unnatural skills?

Decks can only be constructed using the cards from your prerelease box. In 2-Headed Giant, you can freely share cards between partners, so you do end up having a few more options when building your deck, but otherwise you are restricted to those 90 cards you drew. The store running the event had land cards you could borrow to make any deck you wanted to work, so you have to build a 40 card deck using the 17 suggested land cards out of ONLY the 90 cards that came in your prerelease pack.

Sometimes you get lucky and get a super powerful rare or three, like I did, with my Sandwurm Convergence, or both me and my kid getting boosters that contained an Approach of the Second Sun that your opponent just has no answer to. You try to build a deck that has answers to everything. So you try to hedge your bets and build the best deck you can. Is it the best deck at the event? Does it have a chance with a bit of luck on your draws to beat other decks there?

After your packs are open and your deck is built, the only thing left is for you to play games and have fun. This is fundamentally the best take away from my prerelease event. I managed to connect with people and make friends because of the casual, best-of-3 tournament format. As mentioned earlier, the community is incredibly welcoming and kind. It also takes a certain kind of person to want to forego sleep to play games all night.

Excitement and passion are infectious, and that, along with a pile of awesome new cards, was my takeaway from the weekend. Want to delve deeper into this world?
